ive seen these children go from F students to A students. if you give someone a little motivation, a little glimmer of hope, they can amaze you. Now granted some children ARE smarter than others there is no denying that, but i believe what cane is trying to get across, and nobody is getting it but me, is that if you give these kids something to work towards its going to help them in the long run. You are telling me that if a C student is told that he/she will get an award if they try harder is a bad thing? Let's say cindy lou is a C student, a LOW C student, you give her an ultimatum and she brings that LOW C up to a HIGH C, in my eyes thats great progress. That would be unspeakable progress that could or could not be directly related to the fact that she would be getting an award for doing better.

Furthermore, im telling you all, i worked with the children that had no chance, the children who had to stay after school because their parents didnt give a **** about them. After they got off school they went and stayed at a place called "the rock" which took care of them until their parents decided it was time to come get them. I worked with children who COULD NOT READ, COULD NOT DO MATH. Bad genetics?? maybe, but if that is true then i am the best geneticist in the history of the world because just the extra one hour of attention those babies got from me for a semester sure helped a **** ton.

every man and woman born into this world has a chance to better themselves or make a difference if they work at it. It may be the subtlest of changes, but there is that opportunity. If cindy works her ass off and brings her F to a D you better **** well believe that its an improvement. To some people that may not be much, but to that little girl that worked her ass off it means the world. If you give people a chance they will shock you, especially children this young. Dont give up on people, dont throw them away and say you will never make it. Ive been proven wrong many times.

Well speaking as someone who has coached (to many) youth sports over the years while I think it would be nice to use grades as a modavation IMHO at younger ages I think that parents are as if not more responsable for there kids acadimic preformance so what you really should be doing is modavating the parents to get there kids grades up.


Insted of a playing time rule (which would be a nightmare to regulate through the season) why not wave the signup fee for all As on there last report card/Half Price for 1st Honor role and so on this would IMHO do more to modavete the parents to push there kids alittle more

If that's the case, who is gonna foot the bill for the insurance? That's a significant part of any signup fee.

Bingo, bango, and bongo. That's absolutely what I'm saying. I never said my idea was realistic--it's idealistic to me and a slim minority of others at most. It's an IDEA. Feel free to disagree with it, and it may not be perfect, but that's why it's an idea.

I think it's a darn good one and next to no one could logistically/realistically pull it off, but I think it stands as a good idea.

The thing is this: goals have to realistic. But what is realistic for one kid may not be for another. I have taught gifted kids, slow kids, mentally disabled kids, and every kind of kid in between...and the 2 things you can't do with any of 'em is 1-make a goal they can't possibly reach and 2- bore them. One is as bad as the other. It's true kids need to be challenged in order to make them better at both sports and academics...but if you are working with them and don't know their individual limits, you can do more to hurt 'em than help 'em.

OK, thats all and good, but this is about league sports, LL, etc..
do you honestly think a coach has the time to be on that kind of individual basis with all the kids? its simply not possible. most coaches work, have jobs, kids, etc..

itd be impossible for them to give the kids the kind of time and affection you are talking about.

and when discussing grades in response to league sports, its impossible to use grades for playing time without being able to spend the appropriate amount of time with each kid to find out what they are capable of.

im like everyone else, i never said it was realistic, i just said it would be a great idea if it could work and parents/coaches could use it to motivate kids. if you get one kid who is making C's because he is a slacker....... not the kids who are genetically inferior as you all like to call it........ to bring his c's up to an A id say thats a good start.
